Military at MHS

Did you know military children generally move six to nine times during their K-12 years? Many make multiple moves during high school alone. Now hearing this fact just makes you wonder: how do they do in school or how is their social life?Just think of yourself moving in the middle of the school year and having to meet new people and make new friends. Or you had to try to get along with new teachers, which could be very hard sometimes. Now imagine not moving just once or twice but six to nine times, repeating that process of finding new friends and meeting new teachers. Sounds hard right? Here at MHS there is 35 students in a military family. Our school has opportunities for those students in those families to excel in school and have help whenever they need it. Whether it’s school help or social life help.

The school cares about the armed forces and those who have served. Here at MHS, we offer military families some nice resources for them to use. For example, if a student from a military family needed help with math or science he or she can use a tutoring website called “Tutor.com”. Tutor.com is a resource for anyone to use. But if you are in a military family you can get it for free. Tutor.com is a website where you can ask teachers/tutors for help in a section you are struggling in school. The school gives the family the website so the student can have some extra help if they need it. One of my favorite resources the school has is March 2 Success. March 2 Success is an online test preparation course that will provide help with taking standardized test, and improve Math and English skills, March 2 Success is also free. The program was developed by the Army and will help students prepare for assessments examinations, college entrance examinations, trade school entrance tests, military endurance test, and applying for a job. This may not sound very fun at first but in the long run, it could really help out a child's future. But there are other challenges a military family kid goes through than just school. A kid might need help with social needs. Military Kids Connect and Ohio Military Kids are both good resources for that. Military Kids Connect is an online community where kids, tweens can destress and connect with other military kids their age. It helps kids develop coping skills and build psychological health & resilience. The other resource is Ohio Military Kids. This supports the youth of military families throughout their family’s deployment cycle. While delivering recreational, social, and educational programs. Geographically dispersed military youth find positive ways to cope with the stress of their family members while they are deployed in the years.

While I was researching what are school does for military families I got the opportunity to talk Mrs. Quisenberry who is one of the school's student counselors. Mrs. Quisenberry talked and explained how these websites/resources work for students in military families. She also talked about an award called the Purple Heart which recognizes demonstrated leadership ability in a cadet/midshipman enrolled in a ROTC/JROTC program in a High School, College, University or Trade School. Eligibility Requirements: Each cadet/midshipman must be an underclassman (Seniors ARE NOT eligible), have a positive attitude toward ROTC/JROTC and country, hold a leadership position in the cadet corps, be active in school and community affairs, attain a grade of “B” or better in all subjects for the previous semester, and not been a previous recipient of this award.

But there are others ways we appreciate the families who have served at MHS. On December 6th, we have a wrestling match that appreciates our veterans for serving. We as a school say thank you to those who have served. Go out to support the wrestling team, happy holidays.
