Painting your nails: It’s more than what you buy

Moisturizing? It sounds crazy, but yes, moisturizing your nails is wildly important. Coconut oil goes a long way, and rubbing a little on your nail can help with your nail strength and growth (Also with your eyelashes, coconut oil will keep them from breaking when they grow, yes your eyelashes do grow over time). Let it absorb, don’t apply a base coat immediately after, that won’t stick.

While painting your nails, you MUST never forget that the brush is a guide, and that the polish itself should do most of the work and work its way across the nail. Which makes it important to only use three strokes, first to the left, then the right, and then down the center.

Your new best friend? A base coat. This is extremely important. It gives the colored polish more of a grip, and it prevents your nails from becoming tinted yellow by the seeping stains from the colored coat. It can make your manicure last for a few days longer too, so the extra time isn’t that big of a deal.

STAY AWAY FROM QUICK DRY POLISH! This can dehydrate your nail and make it brittle, which will force you to say goodbye to those nails you’ve been trying to grow out for the past month.

Three thin layers will help you much more than two gloppy, thick ones. You have to let each layer dry, and thick blobs of polish will never dry when applied. Keep in mind you never want your nail polish to be too thin, that can cause a streaky appearance rather than a smooth, sleek finish.

File, buff, but be hesitant with the clipping. Filing your nails keeps the edges smooth and straight. Cutting your nails is a major mistake. When you use clippers to cut your nails, you’re sharpening the edges. Filing your nails gives you more control on length and shape. If you keep up with the filing every once in awhile, you won’t need to make any drastic clips, or worse, mistakes.

When filing your nails, never saw the file back and forth. Continue in one direction, slowly. Moving back and forth can cause your nails to be jagged and broken. Buffing your nails is also a must have, it smooths the exterior of the top of the nail, which can help the nail polish move into place better.

Top coats, top coats, top coats. This keeps your nail polish on your nail. Make sure that before you apply your topcoat, the color on your nails is completely dry, and that you move the brush over the front tip of your nail. This keeps the front of your nail polish from wearing away and chipping when in contact with surfaces. Think about it, if you don’t have a top coat, your polish will wear away when you do things, like typing or tapping your desk, this will cause the tips of your nail to weaken and eventually break off.

There we go. Nailed it.
